Mong commits suicide in the ocean after revealing his deepest thoughts to he calls his best friend, Miguel. Mong is quite sick, mentally and physically. Mong is fearless and violent we later learn that he is this way because he believes there’s nothing to live for anymore. Mong has two personalities one known as physco Mong and the other as calm Mong. Later in the book the readers learn that Mong is actually a very bright kid who came from a loving home, but that was ruined when his father killed his mother and attempted to kill him as well. Mong is introduced as a typical troublemaker who does not listen to anybody and does what he wants. Mong in the other hand is the complete opposite. He does not have a big development throughout the book he remains being the same Rondell, depending on others and being kind.

Rondell is a kind boy who believes dearly in God and protects his friends at any cost. With all those things aside Rondell is a very talented basketball player so talented that the people who’ve see him play think he should go professional. Rondell Law is not the brightest, he is often made fun by others because of his inability to keep a conversation going and his inability to function on his own.

Rondell Law a mentally challenged young man who has spent most of his life in and out of group homes ends up in juvi after beating someone up nearly to death. The three boys all with different stories and different personalities cross paths, and become in a strange way what most would call best friends. The very first day at the “lighthouse”(group home) he gets involved in a confrontation with a “skinny chinese” boy who is known for his recklessness. Miguel is translated from juvenile detention to a group home in which he is supposed to rehabilitate, and become a productive man of society. During his short stay he meets a rather “big” young man and expectedly they start off in the wrong foot.

Miguel a young man finds himself being sent to juvenile detention for a crime he is not very proud of. Fortunately I have never been a victim of homelessness, but the book made me feel as if I was part of all their struggles the lack of food, the insanity, and the self conflicts. Instead of being the troublemakers or the good for nothings he gave us an insight to the struggles they went through internally and physically. In “we were here” Matt de la Pena introduces a new side of troubled teens to the readers.
